Day 7: Saturday, March 24

This morning, I ran into Sarah Hughes' parents and younger sister Taylor in the Hyatt elevator. After talking with them for a few moments, her mom said "I know you from somewhere" then remembered we'd met in Helsinki (or, rather, on the plane coming home from Helsinki). She told me that for a second, though, she'd thought I was a Russian coach, LMAO! I've had people recognize me before, but that's a first. :-) I told them that Sarah was one skater that I didn't get nervous watching, because I KNEW she was going to do well. At the time, her mom didn't seem to believe me, though! A couple hours later, I ran into them again, this time at Skatefest. I showed them my photo on display, and Mrs. Hughes introduced me to their son David, who hadn't been with earlier.

Ladies' practice: Hubert landed one 3L, then fell on about four. Kierkgaard had a terrible RT, but landed a nice 3f towards the end of practice. Fontana landed some flutzes, but no flip. Suguri landed a 3L3t.

Notes: Maybe the ice was cursed, because except for the final flight and 2-3 other skaters, no one skated their best, and no one landed more than 4 clean triples until Sarah Hughes. Tatiana Malinina changed some of her program around to add another salchow; I thought her marks were too high. I was really happy that Laetitia Hubert landed her 3t3t; it's a shame that she fell on the 3s (which caused her to single her axel), because she probably would've finished much higher. Mikkeline Kierkgaard was a crowd favorite, just like last year. Sarah Hughes impresses me to no end; the girl has nerves of steel. She didn't miss one jump the entire competition. Irina Slutskaya certainly tried some difficult combinations, but they weren't perfect, and that's what cost her. She was teary-eyed on the podium, but seemed pretty happy at the public medal presentation. I was surprised at Maria Butyrskaya's performance, because she'd been having some rough practices all week. Her performance here in the free skate was the best I've seen her give, after '99 Worlds. Even though she finished fourth, she should be very proud of herself.

I ran into Anna Wenzel at Skatefest after the free skate; I got her to vote for my picture, and we had our picture taken in the Kiss n' Smile. She went back to the hotel, but I stayed for the public presentation of the medals. Sarah Hughes was brought out first. She said a few words (thank you for your support, Vancouver is a wonderful city, etc) and was given a Worlds jacket. Then Irina came out and said a few words. She couldn't think of the word applause, so she clapped instead and apologized for her English. :) In order to put on the Worlds jacket presented to her, she had to take off the jacket she already had on, and in doing so, she did some posing, which caught the jacket lady off-guard, LOL! She's so cute, I really like Irina. Then Michelle came out, wearing a black sweater and bright red leather pants! She said she'll always cherish this moment and that Vancouver was a great city, etc, etc. At the end, she pumped her fist in the air and yelled "you guys rule!" LOL Obviously, she was in a REALLY good mood. :-) As a side note, the jackets were about 2 sizes too big for Irina and Michelle! They're nice jackets, though; I saw Irina's up close when I rode the elevator up with her afterwards.
